Product Description

Captain William Avery is persuaded to investigate a mysterious death at London's newest gentleman's club, and soon discovers a web of rivalries and hatreds simmering behind the club's handsome façade, especially involving its resident genius, Alexis Soyer, "the Napoleon of food," a chef whose culinary brilliance is matched only by his talent for self-publicity.

But Avery is distracted, for where is his mentor and partner in crime Jeremiah Blake? And what if this first death is only a dress rehearsal for something far more sinister?

Reviews/Praise

“Alex Wyndam gives this rousing mystery the full-voiced narration it deserves. He does convincing accents: French, Russian Egyptian, Irish, Cockney, upper crust British.”—Sound Commentary

"In Carter's third Avery and Blake outing, narrator Alex Wyndham's dark, whispery baritone sets the tone as the table is set for some mouthwatering Victorian dishes and a heaping portion of dastardly dealings." —AudioFile

“Wyndham ably portrays cultured British accents, from the blustery coroner to the dandified patter of foppishly dressed club members, as well as the street cockney of the poor.” —Booklist Audio

"Wyndham has a fine time creating arrogant and insipid voices for the Reform clubbers and goes all-out hilarious portraying the club’s brilliant French celebrity chef Alexis Soyer in all his heavily-accented, self-aggrandizing, manic and yet charming grandeur." —Publishers Weekly Audio Review

"Superlative . . . Carter again has crafted an ingenious, fast-moving plot with emotional depth and plausible surprises." —Publishers Weekly Starred Review
